Protect your home from radon
Radon is an invisible and odorless radioactive gas that can enter homes from the bedrock or certain building materials such as blue concrete. Effective radon mitigation often requires technical measures – ventilation plays an important complementary role.
What is radon and why is it dangerous?
Radon is a radioactive gas that forms naturally when uranium in the bedrock breaks down. In Sweden, radon can enter homes from the ground (soil and rock) or from building materials such as blue concrete used between 1929 and 1975.
Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels is the second most common cause of lung cancer after smoking. In Sweden, radon is estimated to cause around 500 lung cancer cases every year.
The reference level for radon in homes is 200 Bq/m³. Many Swedish homes exceed this level without the residents being aware of it.
Important facts about radon
- ⚠️Radon can originate from both the ground and blue concrete
- ⚠️Primary mitigation methods include radon suction systems and sub-slab depressurization
- ⚠️Measurement is always required to determine the correct solution
Ventilation as part of a complete radon solution
In many cases, radon mitigation requires measures such as radon suction fans, drilling or sealing of the foundation. Balanced mechanical ventilation can complement these systems by improving air exchange and stabilizing indoor radon levels.
Improved air circulation
Continuous air exchange helps prevent radon from accumulating indoors.
Complements technical measures
Ventilation works alongside radon fans and ground mitigation systems to enhance overall effectiveness.
Long-term stability
Controlled ventilation contributes to maintaining balanced indoor air quality year after year.
